We all need to hear It

“Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them and you shall put them in possession of it.  It is the LORD who goes before you.  He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you.  Do not fear or be dismayed’ …

And the LORD commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the people of Israel into the land that I swore to give them.  I will be with you.’” – Deuteronomy 31:7-8; 23

We rejoice in Christ’s Eternal Victory over sin, Satan and Death during this Easter Season.  As we rejoice, we continue to need God’s reassurance.  In a way much like the first Christians, this Easter Season is going to give way to another Church season, another chapter in the life of Resurrection Lutheran Church and another reminder that while we cling to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we still linger, we still struggle and we still stumble in this present life.

By God’s grace, God’s Holy Spirit, God’s gift of faith and God’s finished work of salvation for us in Christ alone we are reassured, like Joshua, that God is with us, now and always.

This Easter season will soon change when we remember the Ascension of our LORD Jesus and as we prepare for changes as a church family.  Jesus commands His disciples to be about the work, God’s Work of the Great Commission.  Then Jesus speaks these words which I humbly believe, would make Moses, Joshua and Israel smile as they stood just outside the Promised Land if they heard it.  “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:20b.

It is no coincidence that Jesus uses the words, “I AM” which Moses heard from the LORD in the burning bush and the promise God gave to Joshua at the end of Moses’ earthly life…”I am with you always.”

Like Joshua, like the generation we’re raising now in the Christian faith as fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, uncles, aunts, big brothers and big sisters – we all need to hear IT, we all need to hear God’s promise too.

God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit promises and reassures us through His Word, His Sacraments and ALL the ways He freely gives us His love, forgiveness and promise; the epic, eternal promise that nothing in all of creation can separate us from His love.  This finished promise at the Cross and Empty Tomb is exactly why we cry out, “Alleluia, Christ is risen!  He is risen indeed, Alleluia!”

May we pass on to the whole world, beginning in our own living room, what everyone needs to hear; God’s promise accomplished and fulfilled for us in Jesus Christ.  Christ has come, Christ died to forgive you (yes you, reading this right now!) – Jesus Christ died to forgive your sins, Christ rose from the dead for you.  Christ ascended into heaven…Christ is coming again.  Alleluia!

This is why we are still here on earth, because we all need to hear God’s promises, God’s Word no matter what zip code and state we reside in.  May we be about the life and mission Christ commanded at His Ascension.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
