Resurrection Lutheran School Board

Mission Statement: To provide guidance, both spiritual and secular, to the staff of the Resurrection Lutheran School and Child Care by assisting them in carrying out ministry to young children on behalf of Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Role and Function of the School Board:

  1. Develop policies that will guide and direct the administration in the daily management and operation of the school and child care program.
  2. Prepare and present to the congregation long and short range goals for the school and child care program.
  3. Be responsible, according to provisions made by the congregation, for the calling or engaging the administrator, faculty and staff to ensure a quality program, Lutheran distinctiveness, and the achievement of the school and child care’s stated purpose.
  4. Assist the administrator and staff in providing a program that meets state requirements and is in line with current trends and research in education.
  5. Assist the administrator and staff in providing a program that fulfills the purpose of the school and child care program.
  6. Work with, support, and supervise the administrator who is responsible for the daily management of all aspects of the school and child care program.
  7. Conduct a yearly evaluation of the administrator.
  8. Prepare and annually review the job descriptions for the staff.
  9. Be responsible, according to the provisions of the congregation, for the funding and financial management of the school and child care program.
  10. Provide for the promotion of the school and child care program and help keep its focus related to its purpose and the congregation’s mission.
  11. Carry out such other responsibilities and tasks as may be assigned to the board by the congregation.

Organization of the Board:

  1. The board size may range from five to seven members.
  2. A well balanced board may be made up of an educator, a parent who is a church member, a legal trustee of the congregation, a person knowledgeable about finances and a non-member parent of a child in the school and child care.
  3. Pastor and School Administrator who serve as advisory members of the board.

Qualifications of Board Members:

  1. Possess and demonstrates leadership in the congregation.
  2. Expresses a vibrant interest and understanding of Christian education and Lutheran School and Child Care programs.
  3. Declares a willingness to attend meetings regularly and punctually.
  4. Lives out the Christian faith in word and action.

Board Officers and Respective Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chairperson should:

  1. Have leadership and organization skills.
  2. Be ready to give time for tasks required.
  3. Be able to lead and chair meetings using accepted parliamentary procedures.
  4. Be a positive person.
  5. Be able to motivate.
  6. Possess problem-solving skills.
  7. Be able and willing to work closely with the administrator.
  8. Serve as a co-signer on the school’s bank account.
  9. Provides a written agenda for each meeting.
  10. May sit in on the interviewing of new staff.
  11. Attend the monthly Resurrection Lutheran Church Council meetings.
  12. Serve in this position for two (2) years (as this is a two-year term board position).

The Vice-President should:

  1. Be capable of serving in the absence of the chairperson.
  2. Be capable of assuming a number of responsibilities as directed by the Chairperson of the Board.
  3. Be able to represent the Chairperson when called upon to do so.
  4. Serve in this position for one (1) year (as this is a one-year term board position).

The Secretary should:

  1. Be capable of accurately recording and preparing minutes of meetings.
  2. Have the ability to distribute copies of the minutes of meetings no later than two weeks after the meeting.
  3. Be capable of handling correspondence as directed by the Board.
  4. Be capable of maintaining essential files and records for the Board.
  5. Submit board meeting minutes to the Parish Administrator for file. Post minutes to bulletin board outside fellowship hall.
  6. Serve in this position for one (1) year (as this is a one-year term board position).

The Treasurer should:

  1. Have some experience in bookkeeping and be competent in fiscal matters.
  2. Be capable of preparing, or assist in preparing, a detailed budget which accurately 3. reports educational, staff, and facility needs.
  3. Be capable of preparing regular understandable financial statements.
  4. Be able to work effectively with the church financial committee, the church treasurer, and other individuals related to the financial management of the school and child care program.
  5. Be a co-signer on the School’s bank account.
  6. Set up the Petty Cash Fund.
  7. Provide all Federal forms to venders.
  8. Serve in this position for two (2) years (as this is a two-year term board position).
