Board of Christian Education (BOCE)

Mission Statement: To serve the church by developing, coordinating and administering a comprehensive educational program for members of Resurrection Lutheran Church and School and of visitors; to nurture spiritual growth of all age groups; and provide leadership to and supervision of staff members and volunteers involved in this ministry.

Objectives:

  1. To provide, with the Church School Superintendent, a Bible-based education program for the children and adults, including defining curriculum, special projects, fellowships and various needs;
  2. Organize and coordinate the yearly Vacation Bible School including teachers, advertising, enrollment, etc;
  3. To plan, set goals/objectives, and administer the total education program of the congregation;
  4. To select and train qualified personnel for all educational programs;
  5. To provide the necessary means and facilities for all educational agencies;
  6. To evaluate the educational programs and instruction according to established goals and philosophy;
  7. To prepare and submit an annual budget to the Church Council for educational requirements according to the established goals and philosophy.
  8. Develop and supervise the educational ministries of the church, with direct responsibility for:
    1. Adult education--Sunday mornings, midweek, etc.
    2. Conferences and retreats for continuing and specialized education
    3. Weekday Bible studies
  9. Supervise the recruiting, training and mobilization of the laity to carry out the educational ministries of the church.
  10. Teach the congregation, including:
    1. Sunday morning adult fellowship
    2. Church conferences
    3. Midweek programs
    4. Written media
  11. Conducts regular staff meetings of the Department of Educational Ministries, sharing information gained from other meetings and ensuring good communication at all levels.
  12. Assimilate new members into the educational life of the church.
  13. Coordinate education ministries, supervising staff members working in children's, youth and adult ministries.
  14. Assist in worship and preach at the request of the Senior Pastor.
  15. Teach in the adult education program, as requested.
  16. Conduct weddings and funerals, providing appropriate preparation and support.
  17. Administer the work of the Department of Education Ministries by encouraging teamwork and mutual support and providing leadership and nurture to staff members who work in the department.
  18. Establish departmental goals and objectives by prioritizing related programs, managing the use of facilities, planning an appropriate budget, delegating tasks and evaluating progress regularly.
  19. Work with appropriate committees, officers and leaders to carry out the education ministry of the church.
  20. Attend board meetings as a resource and for informational purposes.
  21. Represent the church by serving on appropriate denomination committees and community organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. To sponsor, plan, coordinate, staff, and evaluate Christian education classes, curriculum and programs for spiritual enrichment.

Chairperson, BOCE:

  1. Oversees budget income and expenditures for Adult Education, Youth Group Ministry, Children’s Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School.
  2. Publicizes Christian Education conferences, trainings, and faith enrichment opportunities available in our region.
  3. Serves as needed upon request of the RCC, Congregation President, and Pastor.
  4. Schedules and leads monthly meetings most often occurring on the third or fourth Tuesday of the month. Remember to write it on the Church calendar located in the vestibule (Church Lobby). Board members attending the month meetings: representative from Adult Education (Director), Sunday School (Superintendent), Youth Ministry.
  5. Chairs must attend the monthly RCC meetings and give them a report of BOCE activity and budget.
  6. Designates a Vacation Bible School Director.
  7. The Chair replacement will attend two to four training sessions with existing Chair person prior to beginning their commitment.
  8. This position is a two year commitment.

Director, Adult Education:

  1. Appoints a committee and meets monthly to discuss what Bible studies the Church congregation might like to attend.
  2. Provides material, classroom assignment, and staffing support for Adult Communion Instruction and Confirmation classes.
  3. Recruits staff, provides training, coordinates time and place for lay Christian Bible study leaders and classes.
  4. Attends and discusses ideas at monthly BOCE meeting.
  5. Oversees budget and approves funds to purchase materials for all Bible study classes or groups and Adult Communion and Confirmation classes.
  6. Coordinates small group ministries in different areas and organizes home based Bible study groups.
  7. The Chair replacement will attend two to four training sessions with existing Chair person prior to beginning their year commitment.
  8. Writes or designates someone to write and submit monthly report or article for church newsletter. Deadline is 8:00 AM on the 15th of each month.
  9. The same person can be re-elected should board see fit to serve a second term.
  10. This position is a two year commitment.
